Description of Program

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
INTERNSHIP IN SMALL ANIMAL INTERNAL MEDICINE AND SURGERY COLLEGE OF VETERINARY MEDICINE, MISSISSIPPI STATE UNIVERSITY

The small animal internship at the Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine is a 12-month clinical program providing advanced training in medicine, surgery and emergency/critical care. The program is designed to qualify the individual for entry into an approved residency program leading to board certification in a recognized veterinary specialty.

The interns predominately rotate through the Internal Medicine (at least 17 weeks), Surgery (at least 17 weeks) and Emergency/Critical Care (10 weeks) services, with smaller time periods allotted to the Community Veterinary Services (1 weeks), Radiology (1 week), and Anesthesiology (1 week) services, and electives (up to 2 weeks). Interns work under the supervision of senior clinicians and are responsible for daily services of the clinic, with a high proportion of predominantly referral-level primary case care responsibilities. The interns cover emergency duty during nights and weekends on a rotation basis, and are expected to remain within the teaching hospital until near midnight while on weekday evening emergency duty.

Each intern will present at least one formal 20-25 minute college-wide seminar each year to the faculty, staff, and veterinary students. The topic is selected by the intern. Other less formal presentations, such as ICU topic rounds, are required throughout the year. Additional regular activities include weekly surgery and medicine journal clubs. Interns will be exposed to at least one hour of traditional formal student/clinician teaching rounds each day, and will frequently also receive an extra 30 to 90 minutes daily of house officer/faculty advanced case rounds exposure. Each intern is expected to submit at least 1 article for publication in a scientific journal of their choice. Opportunities for participation in special projects, classes, and laboratories are also available. Internal funding and elective time for small clinical research projects is also available.

The Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine has a good track record placing interns into highly competitive residency positions.

Upon successful completion of the program, an Internship Certificate is awarded.

Please feel free to contact Dr. Andrew Mackin, Professor, Service Chief and Dr. Hugh Ward Chair of Small Animal Medicine (mackin@cvm.msstate.edu; 662-325-3432) or Dr. Patty Lathan, Assistant Professor of Small Animal Medicine (lathan@cvm.msstate.edu; 662-325-3432) if further information is required. In-person or telephone interviews are neither expected or required, but interested candidates are certainly welcome to call or to visit.
