Description of Program

The internship in equine medicine and surgery at the College of Veterinary Medicine, Mississippi State University is a 12 month clinical program which includes participation in equine surgery, medicine, and emergency care. Interns have the option at their discretion to rotate through the theriogenology and field service rotations. The internship provides clinical hospital based service and fosters learning through consultation with clinical specialists in diagnostic imaging, anesthesiology, theriogenology, dermatology, pathology, clinical pathology, and ophthalmology. In addition, an equine molecular endocrinologist, molecular geneticist, and equine exercise physiologist are on staff at MSU. Opportunity to rotate through one or more of these disciplines is available.

The intern rotates with other house officers in providing after hours emergency care, with a senior faculty member providing direct support. Interns assist in the orientation, supervision and instruction of students during their clinical rotations, as well as veterinary laboratory sessions in the DVM curriculum. Participation in intern rounds, journal club, and seminars is required. Creative activities such as research and manuscript preparation are encouraged.

The equine facility at Mississippi State University is fully enclosed and climate controlled (all barns, working areas and treatment rooms are air conditioned and heated). Available equipment includes 1 and 3 meter video-endoscopes, CT, digital radiography, ultrasound and other standard equipment. There is an on-campus Standardbred training track and equestrian center. Numerous equine athletic events occur within a 10 mile radius of the veterinary school including hunter/jumper, gaited horse and dressage shows; rodeos; 3-day events and fox hunting. Within a 30 mile radius we have large endurance rides, cutting, and reining events. The equine faculty and staff provide a warm “southern” atmosphere which fosters an outstanding learning environment.

Interested individuals are encouraged to contact Dr. Cyprianna Swiderski directly at (662) 325-1400 or swiderski@cvm.msstate.edu with regard to program specifics.
